Previous project phases of hub4africa

Project start and results of the first funding phase

The ‘hub4africa’ project was realised with the aim of creating a multilingual platform to promote technical and vocational education in Africa. After a very short but intensive planning phase with team selection and conceptualisation, the technical and design requirements were defined in close collaboration with experts from Africa.

From February to April 2022, the platform was developed: a trilingual website (German, English, French), a Moodle learning platform with SMS registration and the creation and translation of initial content.

A prototype of the platform was presented and officially launched at E-Learning Africa in Kigali, Rwanda, in May 2022. This was followed by an expansion phase that lasted from June to December 2022. The platform's content and offerings were expanded, and a Portuguese version with initial training programmes was developed by the end of the year. In addition, a social media marketing concept was developed and the platform was supported by the creation of channels on Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.

The final phase from January to June 2023 focused on optimisation and further expansion, with the platform being expanded to include Arabic and the first training courses being offered in Arabic by the end of the funding phase. Multipliers were trained to be able to use the platform effectively. As a result, ‘hub4africa’ was sustainably integrated into the target groups and expanded for long-term use.

This structured and targeted implementation has created a multilingual and versatile platform that makes a significant contribution to digital training in Africa and promotes international networking.

  • The image shows the home page of the hub4africa.bayern website. It is a colourful and visually appealing design with illustrations of different people. The people are diverse in terms of skin colour, clothing and gender and appear modern and positive. They are depicted in different contexts representing education, profession and technology (e.g. with laptops and smartphones). In the background are symbols representing different areas such as work, education and sustainability. Above the illustrations is a navigation bar with the following categories: Courses, Career Orientation, Industries & Professions, Projects and Events. A large, green speech bubble callout emphasises that the courses are funded by the Bavarian state and offers a button with the text ‘Find your FREE course’. At the bottom of the image is a reference to the website's ‘eco mode’, which saves data and electricity. An icon with a leaf emphasises the focus on sustainability. The overall image conveys a positive and inviting impression and suggests the possibility of taking part in educational programmes and career opportunities free of charge. The visual design is clear and uncluttered so that the most important information is immediately recognisable.

Continuation and expansion of the platform in phase 2:

In the second funding phase, hub4africa was systematically developed and expanded in terms of content and language. One milestone was the addition of the Amharic language to the platform, which enabled it to be tailored even better to the needs of its target groups in Africa. By the end of the project on 31 December 2024, the offering had grown to over 490 learning modules in six languages.

In addition, the qualification measures for teachers and coaching for start-ups were further expanded in order to sustainably strengthen the education and start-up landscape in Africa.

During this phase, the number of participants on the platform was increased to over 27,000 active users. hub4africa has thus established itself as a permanent fixture in career guidance in numerous African countries and is making a significant contribution to vocational training and international networking.

Another innovation was the introduction of a new topic area ‘Living and working in Germany’. This programme was aimed in particular at people interested in migrating to Germany as skilled workers and included important learning modules on this topic.
