What does a Bricklayer do?
Bricklayers pour foundations, build exterior and interior walls and floor slabs or assemble them from prefabricated elements. For concrete work, they make formwork, mix concrete or process ready-mixed concrete. They place the fresh concrete in the formwork and compact it. They also plaster walls and insulate buildings. During repair and renovation work, they identify and repair structural damage and its causes.
What is important?
- Good physical condition (e.g. lifting and carrying building materials)
- Manual dexterity (e.g. when setting bricks accurately)
- Physical control and a head for heights (e.g. when working on ladders and scaffolding)
- Ability to work in a team (e.g. when assembling heavy prefabricated parts)
